Book Blogger Hop for January 7, 2011: 01/07/11
It's a new year. I'm back from my ping-pong travels up and down the state. My husband's currently in New Orleans on business. He'll be home soon. But for now it's just me, the kids and the cat.
While I'm on vacation before the Spring Semester, I'm doing freelance writing. I'm aiming for an article a day. It's not much but it adds up.
This week's question is what book changed my life. I read too much to have a single book. The good books, those that earn a four or five stars, earn their high stars for leaving a mark on me. Reading should leave a mark. If a book doesn't make any sort of impression on me the book earns only one or two stars no matter how popular the book is.

Small Review
I agree, I don't care if a book is popular. How I connect to it is what matters to me.

Plus my tastes tend to be pretty odd. Thank you for stopping by!
Melissa
I agree! If a book doesn't speak to your personally, no matter how "popular" it is, it's time to move on.
Too many good books to waste time of eh ones.
Pussreboots
Right. At the same time though I hope that the good books will leave their mark on me. That's why I can't point to one book and say that's the one that made me who I am today.

Hopping by to say hello and wish you a wonderful weekend!
Pussreboots
Thank you. It's a mostly quiet one.
Julie
There are many books that stay with me for years and years, but there are a few that actually prompt me to DO something. Those are very special books, indeed.
Have a great weekend!
Pussreboots
Single books / works of art don't prompt me to do something. It's more of a cumulative effect for me.
Kah Woei
I guess I agree with that. It's not always the ones I love that I remember.
Pussreboots
There are three kinds of books for me: those that I love and remember; those that I hate and remember and those that make no impression on me whatsoever. That third kind is the worst of book, in my opinion.

Thx for hopping by!
A post a day is very ambitious! Good for you! I understand why you couldn't pick just one book...I don't have a lot of 5 star books. I'm a little picky and critical. Understand your point...

Only a quarter of the books I read last year earned five stars but that's still over one hundred titles out of nearly six hundred books read.

Hello, Just passing through on the Blog Hop.
Do you really read and post one book review a day? I thought I was a fast reader but that really surpasses me. Good for you, I'm jealous, lol
Cheers!!!
Pussreboots
Do I read each and every day? Yes! Do I finish a book every day? No. But I read a lot of short fiction (picture books and short stories) so I have a list of finished books to draw from for writing my reviews. The reviews I get written ahead of time so when it comes time to post (usually after dinner) I can just pick a review and get it posted on my blog.

Thanks for stopping by and following. I agree that it's impossible to pick one book. I love the fact that good literature can have such a profond impact. Have a great weekend.
Pussreboots
I could write whole posts on books that have influenced my life one way or another.

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for hopping by! I completely agree with you. Any books that get 4 or 5 stars (or an A or B in my case), then that means it left an lasting impression. Very good way to put it!! =)
Pussreboots
Thanks for stopping by. I use stars just because it coincides with GoodReads and I like to cross post my reviews there.
Alison
How do you get involved in freelance writing? Do you just write stories or articles and then send them to magazines? I'd be interested in trying to do more writing.
Happy weekend!

I write for Demand Studios who produces content for eHow and a few other sites. I saw a post about it on Pro Blogger and decided to send them a writing sample. The pay's not great but has helped make ends meet while I'm in school.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I agree that really good books leave an impression on you.
Hope you have a good weekend!

You're welcome. Happy reading!

Hi,
Just hopping by and following through! Thanks for stopping by and I like your answer, I feel the same way
Pussreboots
I noticed a lot of similar answers. Seems to be an even divide between those who have a life changing book and those who see a cumulative influence.
Jean
That is very true! That is a very good answer :) It kind of reminds me how many books have left an impression on me, but the book I listed did actually change my life, so I think it's slightly different, for me.
Pussreboots
Maybe in the future there will be such a book in my life. Right now though I can't point to a single life changing book. Instead I see a series of small influences.
Jessica
It is hard sometimes to pick just a single book! Like the question of what 10 books would you bring to a deserted island. I would want to ask for 10 series at least!
Thanks for visiting my blog. Have a GREAT weekend!
Pussreboots
The deserted island question is actually easier for me. I'd want a blank journal.
Ruthi
I've yet to read a book that didn't leave its mark on me; I believe every book has something to offer me and each of its readers.
Pussreboots
I am surprised most by the books that don't leave any lasting impression on me. They are fairly rare for me, thank goodness, but always surprising.
elizabeth
Great answer! I think most books leave a mark on me in someway.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

You're welcome.

Thank you for hopping by my blog! Good point about reading leaving a mark....

It was something I picked up while reading Proust and the Squid over the holiday.
Julie @ Knitting and Sundries
Exactly right. I've read many 'popular' books that didn't hit the mark with me at all, and some smaller indie prints that scored right through!
Pussreboots
I've had the same percentage of successes and misses with the big publishers, the indies and the self publishers. I always hope a book will a mark on me.
Lu
Hopping by to say have a great Sunday and a great week further!
Pussreboots
Thanks. It was a good Sunday.
Jen
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great Sunday. I'm a new follower.
Pussreboots
Welcome to my blog. Thank you for following!
Logan Turner
You make a great point. It's really hard to think of only one book that affected me above others, and different books left an impression for different reasons. Thanks for stopping by! Following you back.
Pussreboots
Welcome to my blog. Most every book and story I've read leaves me with a memory of how it changed me. I am trying now with my reviews to include the story behind the how and why I read the book or short story to share the impressions it left on me.
Alisha S.
Indeed, every time a great book comes around it will always be remembered and thus special in its own way. Forgettable books are...well, not quite worth the time. ^_^
Pussreboots
Forgettable books are forgettable. And that makes me sad. Thanks for stopping by.
Pussreboots
An article a day was a lot when I first started doing it but I have a nice collection of prewritten reviews now so I'm not constantly reading and writing.
Pussreboots
You're welcome. Happy reading.
