Book Blogger Hop for February 04, 2011: 02/03/11
The question this week asks what we are reading and why. As I participate in the It's Monday, What Are You Reading? meme, I shan't reiterate what I've already posted.
Instead I will speak in generalities of what I will be reading for the next few weeks and why. My reading consists mostly of textbooks, picture books, books I own and books on my wishlist. There might be some other random stuff in there too as my whims take me. But I am trying to curb those whims so that I read what I actually want to read.
Textbooks:
Why? I'm in my second semester of a library science degree. I'm a book blogger who wants to be a librarian. So the textbooks this semester are books on cataloguing, books on picking books for children ages 5 to 8 and books on library management.
Picture Books:
Here's a tricky category. First and foremost, I am a parent. I have two children who are still reading picture books. So I already read a ton and a half of them. Now add in the fact that I'm taking a class about books for children ages 5 to 8. That tosses in assigned picture book reading!
My TBR Pile:Oh goodness. Where do I begin. I have two or three years' worth of reading sitting on shelves. It includes fiction from the turn of the last century, manga, young adult fiction, science fiction and some other miscellany.
Wishlist:
I have around 600 wishes recorded on GoodReads and I'm adding about ten or so new ones each an every week. I'm reading about three books off my wishlist every week. You can see it's an uphill battle but at least I'm enjoying what I'm reading. I'm getting my books from the library for this project.

You certainly do have a lot on the go!
Pussreboots
The textbooks I have to read. The picture books are quick. I have three books of any length that I'm reading seriously: Kraken, Alone of a Wide Sea and West Coast Journeys.
Kylie
Impressive wishlist size.. i just LOVE picture books!
Pussreboots
It's thirteen months of wishes. Given that I read nearly 600 books last year, I should done with 2010's wishes by 2012.
The Slowest Bookworm
Wow, that's a lot of books! I thought I was bad with about a years worth of reading on my shelves :)
Pussreboots
You can see why I'm focusing now on reading only what I really want to.
Alison
Hopping through. The TBR pile never seems to end. Too many good books.

I'm not buying books right now and I'm trying to pare down my books.
Shan
I also seem to be adding more to my wishlist than I'm reading each week. But it's a lot of fun, there are so many great books out there.
Pussreboots
Last summer I had three years of wishes on my list. Now I'm down to thirteen months. I'm having lots of fun finally reading off the list.
Jenny
That's an impressive wishlist you have - 600? Hope you get to cut into it soon, it's important to enjoy what you're reading otherwise it becomes a chore. Have a great weekend!
Pussreboots
If I didn't add any new books to the list, I would be done with it in about eighteen months. It's not likely though that I'll stop adding books to the list.
Kay
Wow, you sound busy. Good luck with your degree.
Hopping by.
Christin
Hopping back - new follower here :-) I can sympathize with the huge tbr pile and wishlist - I think my to-read list on Goodreads is somewhere in the 900s now.
Hope you have a good weekend!
Pussreboots
Mine might be in the 900s if I keep adding books faster than I read them. Thank you for stopping by.
Brenda
Three library courses AND children young enough for picture books? Wow. Iron woman!
My tbr pile is insane as well. My husband got sick of piles all over the bedroom floor and bought me a bunch of bookshelves. I need more book shelves. Like one of your other commenters, I could stop buying books now and not run out of something to read for years.
Such an addiction.
Love your blog, btw. Thanks for stopping by mine.
Pussreboots
My husband has his own piles of books. I have stopped buying new books and I am slowing making headway through my TBR pile.
Howard
Good answer! The answer on my book blog is a little embarassing; it‚s a book that‚s been sitting on my TBR pile for a year.
To my shame, I only opened the book because I remember it contained an Amazon gift card.
All the sordid details on my book blog.
Hop on over!
Pussreboots
You remind me of my husband. He keeps important things in his books too.
Asher K. (Paranormal Indulgence)
Wow! That is indeed a ton of books!
Good luck getting through that thick reading pile. Have a wonderful weekend, be safe, and happy reading!
Pussreboots
Thanks. I'll manage a little at a time.
Kah Woei
Wow, I don't know how you can keep 2-3 years TBR. :-)
Pussreboots
That's just the number of books I own that I haven't read divided by my normal reading speed. The amount used to be higher but I've read through a bunch of them. I've also donated books I know I'm not going to read.
Pussreboots
Actually it's frustrating. I'd like to have fewer shelves and more room for other things.
Pussreboots
My library is my source for picture books. If you have a local library you could just find a stack and spend fifteen minutes reading some. You wouldn't even have to check them out! Thanks for stopping by.

I have a ton of wishes on my GoodReads. I know that I'll never catch up, but at least I know that I'll always have something to read!
My textbooks are all about teaching/classroom management/teaching ESOL students. Some are fun, some not so much! :)
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Pussreboots
Good luck with your classes.
Heather Lynn
Wow that is a very big wish list. I always yell at my self for adding new books to that pile. Right now I have about 60
Pussreboots
My list got so long because I didn't understand how to use the interlibrary loan system. Now that I do, I am reading the books off my list.

Just hopping by on the blog! Thanks for stopping by my site.
LOL!! your reading generalities reflect mine to a tee. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever get "caught" up!
Happy Reading!
Pussreboots
That's why I'm making the effort to specifically read books off my wishlist this year. I don't know if I'll ever get caught up but I want to at least get closer to catching up.

My wish list and TBR pile are massive as well!! I'd love to be a librarian some day!!
Hope you have a great weekend,

I'm doing my library degree completely online. I have classmates all over the world.
Jessica S.
Hopping back to say hi! You really have a lot of books on your plate!
Have a GREAT weekend!
Pussreboots
Thank you for stopping by. Hope you're weekend is great as well.
Stormi
I wish the colleges around here had a library science degree. :( You have a bunch of different types to read so I hope you enjoy most of them, not sure if textbooks can be enjoyable..lol
Pussreboots
My degree is completely online. They accept students from all over the world.
Delphyne
So many books, too little time!! My kids keep me in picture book land, too. I hope you are having a great weekend.
Pussreboots
I like reading picture books with them.
Ms.Tiptress
Thanks for visiting my blog. Im interested to see how big your wishlist gets and the ensuing battle to occur.
Have fun!!
Pussreboots
I will try to remember to post updates on my blog. Thanks.
Jo
I empathize with you about your current reading of textbooks. When I was in library school, I squeezed in my pleasure reading for about 15 minutes before bed (which was all I could manage before passing out). Hope your classes are going well! :)
Pussreboots
I save my ten pages of Kraken for just before bed.
Lu
Hopping by to say have a great weekend!
Already following :)

Thank you for your recent visit to my blog, My Bookshelf. As a child, one of the things I wanted to be when I grew up was a librarian. It still has interest for me, either that or own a great bookstore or be an accomplished and published writer. I am working on the last dream.
Just for my information, what is MANGA?
Pussreboots
Manga are Japanese serialized graphic novels. They come in all genres and for all age groups. A bunch of them are now translated into English and are loads of fun to read.
Well, with a list like that you should be easy to buy gifts for Christmas!
Pussreboots
You'd think. But I hardly ever get books for gifts.
Pussreboots
Schoolwork keeps me busy. Thank you for the follow.
Ruthi
Your reading reasoning makes perfect sense to me!

Oh .. I just looked around at the visible TBR piles ... I'm thinking I have a .. long time that I can read without ever receiving a single new book! I read a lot of middle grade books with my Bebe Boy, and picture books with the grandbebes, so I understand the children's books! And I have about 400 on my wishlist at Goodreads too, which means that I need to get some of the TBR pile read so I can get to THOSE (I can't believe I have over 400 on the wishlist - Wow). :)
Pussreboots
I realized I would never get to my wishlist if I waited to finish all the books on my TBR. So instead I'm culling my TBR and reading a TBR followed by a wishlist book, checked out from the library.
