Comments for Book Blogger Hop for March 25, 2011
Today's question asks what book I would physically visit if I could. Oh how very Michael Ende or Jasper Fforde!
When I was a child the answer would be simple and of the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. The second book in the series has Dorothy returning to Oz via a California earthquake. As a kid growing up in California, I suppose I was always a little hopeful.
Answer as an adult, I suppose my answer would be more selfish. I'd like to enter my own books. These are ones I've written for fun. Most of them take place on a planet in the far future called New Albion. There is a tongue of cheek Arthurian theme running through many of the books. When I'm hurting for an idea for NANOWRIMO, I revisit the planet.
My reason for wanting to visit is to really see things so I could take copious notes. It would make things so much easier!

Very interesting answer! If you're going to write books, though, you should definitely write what you'd like to live!
Just hopping by for the party!

Earthquakes are always a possibility in California.

I had a feeling you were going to say that, lol. I don't think it's selfish at all - I'm working on a novel right now, and I would totally jump right into it if I had a chance :)
It seems that you are a bit braver than I am - there is no way I would ever want to be caught in The Return To Oz. That book scared the bejeezies out of me!
Have a great weekend!

Return to Oz is a novelization of the film. The film blends together books 2 through 8 in the series. The travelling via the earthquake rupture is in Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and was inspired by the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

:D I think that's a great idea! Going into your own books I mean like you said you can see things first hand. Though it makes my head spin to think of the possibility; which came first your idea for something you see in a book or did you see the idea and then write it?
Comment #12: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 13:31:11
The saying is "write what you know." All writing, at least for me, is a mixture of things I've experienced, things I've read and things I've immagined.
Comment #13: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 12:02:08
That's awesome that you have the dedication to write entire books! I'd love to hear more about them sometime. :)
Comment #14: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 13:33:20
I have one book up as an ebook (both PDF and epub). I plan to add more as I get them edited.
Comment #15: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 12:27:37
In your own books is a great place to be! If I had some of my own, I'd want to be there. :)
Comment #16: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 13:36:22
You should try Nanowrimo some year. Then you'll have a book of your own.
Comment #17: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 12:59:55
Your planet sounds like a really interesting place to visit! I think Oz would be awesome to visit too. :)
Have a great weekend!
Comment #18: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 13:48:25
As a tween I was so addicted to the Oz books!
Comment #19: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 13:35:31
It's not selfish at all! If I'd be a writer, I would probably want to enter my own books, too :)
So, where can I read your stories? They sound fascinating :)
Comment #20: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 13:49:33
I have one of them up as an ebook. I hope to get others posted as I edit them.

Apologies in advance for my answer this week as it will not immediately resonate with the book blogger population which happens to be 99.5% female.
My choice is a book series geared towards guys which won't enthrall the vast majority of my fellow book bloggers (who are almost entirely female) with the extensive discussion of powerful weapons and sexy milspec gear, beautiful women, eye-popping action sequences (with occasionally obscene violence), and the like.
But there IS something in my answer that just about everyone of the female persuasion can benefit from my decidedly "books for guys" post. Hop on over to http://www.howardsherman.net to find out what it is.
Happy Hop Friday!

Given your two choices, I would have gone with Zelazny. He could write like nobody's business. I am more of an action/adventure, thriller reader than my husband. He's the chicklit, romance and paranormal reader in the family.
Comment #23: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 16:58:54
I think that's a great answer! Of course you should be writing about a time and place you love, so it's perfect!
Comment #24: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 21:58:05
Thanks. I'm not sure I'd want to make it my full time home, but maybe a summer residence.
Comment #25: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 17:24:23
I find that sometimes, my own imagination is more satisfying than someone else's, so I definitely understand where you are coming from!
Comment #26: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:00:12
Thanks! If I went, I'd want to take my camera.
Comment #27: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 17:41:48
I think many of us writers would love to be the stars of our own series— after all each character we create has a little bit of us in them!
Jasper Fforde is a fabulous author! I wouldn't mind being in the Thursday Next series!!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Comment #28: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:02:14
I wouldn't want to be a star, just a visitor.
Comment #29: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 18:08:04
If I would have written my own book I would choose that too. Thank you for stopping by my blog and have a great weekend!

Thanks for stopping by today. I love your motivation. It reminds me of the premise that Burroughs used when he wrote the Mars books, that he had just laid down in a trance and taken dictation from John Carter about his adventures.
Comment #32: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:06:25
I can relate to Burroughs although I can't say I was only taking dictation.

It's not selfish at all. Everyone wished they could live in a world of their own creation. Although, Oz probably would have been fun too!
Comment #36: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:09:13
Oz would be fun. Where ever I went I would only want to live there part time. I'd want to come home too for some months out of the year.
Comment #37: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 22:36:48
That's definitely a good answer. It would be nice to enter your books world to soak up some of the atmosphere...definitely makes it easier to write about, right? Have a great weekend!!
Comment #38: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:10:23
I hope so. But maybe it would be too overwhelming!
Comment #39: Friday, March, 25, 2011 at 22:44:52
Haha I'd love to be in a world of my own! Everything would be perfect and just the way you want ;)
Comment #40: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:12:24
It's not perfect and I wouldn't want it to be.
Comment #41: Saturday, March, 26, 2011 at 00:30:15
Love the Michael Ende reference. The Neverending Story is one of my favorite books.
I didn't even think about my own novels. I'm not sure that I would choose to live in one of them though. I'd have to think about it for a bit.
Comment #42: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 22:14:03
It's one of my favorites too.

Great idea! You could just write about what you saw AND you could change things in the books that didn't work out in practice.
Comment #46: Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 13:44:30
I'd also want my camera with me. That's for sure.

First I love the Wizard of Oz! GREAT CHOICE. And second, well I never thought of entering my books... but if I were to add on to my question, I would put my books down too! I would love to meet my characters!
Comment #52: Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 14:29:20
Wouldn't it be fun to see our characters in the flesh?
Comment #53: Saturday, March, 26, 2011 at 10:31:55
Hello! I'm stopping by on the hop! I had no idea that Dorothy returned to Oz! That sounds awesome! I'm definitely going to check that out! My answer is at my blog: A Book Addict's Haven. Have a great weekend!
Comment #54: Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 14:31:42
Dorothy actually ends up living in Oz in later books. The one in which she returns is Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.
Comment #55: Saturday, March, 26, 2011 at 13:12:00
My choice was also another world, Narnia. :D Love Oz, too!

I don't have as clearly focused an imagination as I'd like. That's why I'd like to visit in person.

Oh the Oz books, yes!! I forgot about those. I too would love to be in those books. Thanks for stopping by!
