Know the Parts of a Book: 11/23/13
Know the Parts of a Book by Janet Piehl is an information literacy picture book. It walks elementary school students through the typical parts of a nonfiction book. Using bright photographs, the young protagonist, Will, walks through the process of finding information in a book. His process of learning about frogs serves as a method to teach children some of the most common and useful parts of a book from a reader's perspective. He has a specific topic in mind. He uses the spine and the title to locate a potential book. From there he goes through the table of contents, index, and glossary to hone in on e the subjects that interest him. He uses the glossary to define words he has trouble with. It's a very basic, introductory type book. For kids doing their first report ever, it's a good start.
