The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes by DuBose Heyward is a classic picture book about a determined female bunny who all her life wants to be the Easter Bunny. There are challenges that potential Easter Bunnies must face. The best one is awarded magical golden shoes that give them the ability to travel the world in a single night. She is told as a child that she can't because she's a girl and she will be expected to raise a family instead. Through patience and hard work she does ultimately achieve her goal. And she does but as her children are nearly grown she is given the chance at long last to wear the gold shoes. All the home management she has done with her children gives her the wherewithal to be the Easter Bunny. Best of all, her good parenting has given her children the skills to keep the home running smoothly while she does her job. As a parent who recently went back to school and changed career with the full support of my family, I found The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes a relevant and uplifting story.
