Brown Girl Dreaming: 03/12/17
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is an upper middle grade memoir told in free verse poetry. It recounts Woodson's childhood, through numerous moves, the heartbreak of loss and the events of the civil rights movement. Through her poetry she also explains how she struggled as a child with reading and with telling stories. Just as she struggled with writing, I must admit I struggled with reading it. Poetry for me is time consuming and thus this book ended up taking me almost a year to read. There's an audio version performed by the author that I was would like to listen to in the future.
