The Newlyweds: 09/30/18
The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger is about bride who has moved from Bangladesh to Rochester, New York. A hundred years ago she would have been a mail order bride. Now she is a member of an internet matchmaking site. She's here to marry George. He's bought a house and she's expecting to start a family. And then nothing happens because they don't really know each other. And they have their separate lives. Amina is homesick. There's also the difference of religion. But heres the thing, Freudenberger wrote outside her realm of knowledge. She's not a Deshi. She seems to have created Amina to be an exotic fish out of water, rather than to be a well rounded person who hasn't found the life she was expected and also feels like she can't hold up her end of the bargain.
