Dragonbreath: 05/23/19
Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon is the first of the Dragonbreath series. It's set in a typical suburban landscape except that its populated with dragons. The titular character is an upper elementary school aged dragon who hasn't managed yet to breath fire. Eventually the novel settles down into an undersea quest where Dragonbreath meets cousin Edward (a sea serpent) with help of his school friend Wendell. Reading this series after reading all of the Harriet Hamsterbone books, I see this book as the green hued prototype. Dragonbreath looks a lot like Harriet. Wendell looks and acts a lot like Wilbur. The oddball humor is there too but not as refined as it is in the Harriet Hamsterbone series. Not all of the jokes stick here. The next book in the series is Attack of the Ninja Frogs (2010).
