Delicatesy

Delicates by Brenna Thummler (2021) is the second book in the Sheets series. Marjorie Glatt is no longer needing to run the laundry and go to high school at the same time. Her father is well enough to help, which means she can focus on high school and her ghost friends.

Enter into the mix Eliza Duncan, the daughter of the swim coach who believes in ghosts and spends all her spare time trying to photograph them. Her conviction leads to her being teased by a group of kids and puts Marjorie in the middle of a tough situation.

Then of course there is Wendell. Halloween gives him the chance to meet other people and he strikes up a genuine friendship with Eliza. He's the first person to realize just how badly she's hurting and what lengths she might go to end that hurt.

Over all it's a good, quick and compelling read. I'm still not sold on the artwork, especially for Marjorie. She seems to always be making a stink face regardless of what's happening or what emotion we're told she's feeling.

Chart showing how the two books are side by side on the RNS

Like the previous book, this one sits on the Road Narrative Spectrum. In fact, it's only one spot over. The travelers are still marginalized (66). The destination is still uhoria (CC). But this time the route there is the Blue Highway (33), meaning the roads Marjorie walks through town.

The next book is Lights (2023).

Five stars
