Komi Can't Communicate, Volume 7: 01/25/25

Komi Can't Communicate, Volume 2

Komi Can't Communicate, Volume 7 by Tomohito Oda (2017) is set during Christmas and New Year's. Christmas also happens to be Komi's birthday. Although I don't intentionally read books by their season, I did read this volume during the holidays.

By volume 7 (chapters 86-99), Komi and her friend group are well established. She is still incredibly shy about speaking but her friends know and support her (often in their own idiosyncratic ways). That means the focus of the stories can be on friends doing things together, rather than on all the awkward introductions and over the top reactions that have bogged down some of the previous volumes.

This volume has Christmas / birthday shopping, a birthday hang out with Komi at her house, a snowball fight, and the traditional New Year's trip to a shrine. Except this year Komi has been wrangled into serving as a shrine maiden.

Of the volumes I've read, this one was one of my favorites. All the stories just flow. It's a fun and cozy read for a cold day.

Five stars
