The Way of the Bear: 02/22/25

The Way of the Bear

The Way of the Bear by Anne Hillerman (2023) is the twenty-sixth book in the Navajo mystery series (aka Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito mysteries). Bernadette is with Chee while he is there to meet a wealthy donor. Before her well needed R&R can begin she's nearly rundown and then helps deliver a baby on the side of the road. And that's before the two bodies.

From the very beginning Bernie knows things are off. But she's too tired and stressed to have a good deep think about what's off. There are constant distractions and an impending blizzard.

Of the two mysteries, the dead man at the door of the missing donor is the more interesting and puzzling. The man found frozen to death near his car could have been interesting except that there are short chapters from the perspective of the criminals. It gives a lot away unnecessarily. I ultimately began skipping the these chapters and found the book far more compelling without them.

The next book in the series is Lost Birds (2024).
