Dear Manny: 03/27/25

Dear Manny

Dear Manny by Nic Stone (2025) is the third and final book in the Dear Martin series. Jared Peter Christensen is running for junior class president of his college. He's up against an arrogant racist who like him is a legacy enrollment.

A third candidate joins the election at the last minute, a transfer student. She's a whip smart Black girl who won't back down. Jared knows she's the right person to win but just can't get himself to withdraw.

As with the other two books this one is told in a variety of methods including letters. Likewise, this book is short and to the point. It pulls no punches and is an emotional rollercoaster.

I need to re-read Dear Martin. I was overly harsh on my initial assessment of it back in 2020. I will also say that I have matured / mellowed as a reader. And Nic Stone has matured as a writer. I know that the afterword says this is the last one but if a Dear Jared were ever to come into being with Dylan as the main character, I would absolutely love to read it.

Five stars
