Pretzel: 03/11/24
Pretzel by Margret Rey with H.A. Rey (Illustrator) (1944) is about love and friendship triumphing over prejudice. Pretzel grows to be a very long dachshund. He has his eyes on Greta, a black dachshund but she won't have anything to do with him. This isn't a story about a stalker ultimately wearing down the girl of his dreams. Pretzel is a patient dog who respects boundaries. He does try politely to befriend Greta and she just isn't into him and is often quite rude about it. Greta's complaint is that he's too long. He is long enough to make himself into a classic pretzel shape! After all of that rejection when Greta needs help (after falling into a hole), Pretzel comes to her rescue. He does it because it's the right thing to do. He doesn't ask or expect anything in return. And that's when Greta realizes what a decent dog he is (and that an extra long body can be useful). Modern editions of this book market it as being part of the "World of Curious George" but it's not. I bears a similar look because H.A. Rey illustrated it and he must have liked drawing dachshunds. The dachshund in the long running show (2006-2022) is named Hundley. There's a sequel book, Pretzel and the Puppies (1946). Five stars Comments (0) |
