Space for Everyone: 03/23/24
Space for Everyone by Seina Wedlick and Camilla Sucre (Illustrator) (2025) is a picture book about moving and holding on to family and friends despite a new location. At the center of the story is a dining room table that always manages to accommodate everyone no matter how many or whatever the occasion. The main character is a Nigerian girl named Zainab. Her days are made up of vignettes around the table. She sees her parents there for breakfast. She does her homework there. Kith and kin come to share meals there. The food of large parties are put there, even if the people end up spilling into other rooms. The table is also the last thing packed up when the family moves. Zainab worries there won't be space enough for it or that the usual hustle and bustle of visitors won't come to the new house. Neither end end up true. If anything, there are new folks for the table as neighbors introduce themselves. The book is lovingly illustrated in warm, saturated colors. The hues convey the love of the family and their extended family. The room feels cozy and welcoming even as the house is picked up and moved. Five stars Comments (0) |
