Kowloon Generic Romance, Volume 6: 06/01/25

Kowloon Generic Romance, Volume 6

Kowloon Generic Romance, Volume 6 by Jun Mayuzuki and Amanda Haley (Translator) (2021) gives some background into Kujirai B and Kudou's relationship, including their engagement. As with the previous volumes, this flashback is at the start of the volume and serves as counterpoint to the present day events.

Meanwhile we also get to learn more about Miyuki and Gwen. Although I'm still not as sold on their side plots, I do appreciate these quieter moments with the two. It's interesting to learn about their ties to Kowloon and to finally learn something about how the current city might work, thus recontextualizing some of the incongruent scenes of previous volumes.

As I'm reading these volumes, I am also watching the anime. The anime is going quickly and seems to be on pace to go through all of the volumes by the end of the season. Although the anime is a very faithful adaptation, I find it actually easier to follow than I do the books. I don't know if it's the inclusion of color or the BGM or something else. It's nice, though, to have a different way to experience the same story to get a fuller and more nuanced appreciation of it.

Chart showing the six volumes on the Road Narrative Spectrum.

As with the previous volumes, volume six is on the Road Narrative Spectrum. Like the majority of the volumes so far, the travelers are Scarecrow / Minotaur (99) depending on their relationship to the city. Their destination is the city (00). Their route there is the maze (CC) as represented by the collapse of a building.

Five stars
